The intensely colourful and diverse culture of Puerto Rico is completely unique to that of its Caribbean neighbours’ - a destination that should feature on any luxury superyacht wish list. Technically a commonwealth of the United States, the island of Puerto Rico effortlessly blends the efficiency of the United States with the easy-going rhythm of the Caribbean. Chic boutiques nestle between old Spanish forts, whilst modern, concrete structures threaten to encroach on lush rainforests.

Puerto Rico boasts four marinas, outstanding maintenance facilities, luxury attractions, a deep cultural history and profound natural beauty. The largest marina in the Caribbean, Puerto del Rey, is situated on the east coast of Puerto Rico, between San Juan and St. Thomas, offering great access to the island’s most important attractions. The yacht club, on the south-eastern coast of the island, provides a sophisticated range of services for superyachts and access to the renowned Palmas del Mar Resort.
San Juan is the capital of Puerto Rico. El Condado and Miramar are the city’s more affluent areas and are home to exquisite boutiques, plush hotels and boast delicious cuisine, both local and international. The business centre of the island is in Hato Rey and also houses the Plaza Las Américas, a sprawling mall of over 300 shops, perfect for a day away from the yacht and for enjoying a little retail therapy. Just outside San Juan lies Isla Verde, with its pristine beaches and rugged parks.
On the south coast is Ponce, Puerto Rico’s second largest city. Though historically rich and filled with impressively imposing architecture, even the busy city square has a relaxed, family atmosphere. Night owls amongst your charter group should head to La Guancha for open-air bars and a more festive ambience.
Isla Mona is a gorgeous place of almost entirely feral growth, while the Bosque Estatal de Carite, high in the central mountains, is a trekker’s dream. Naturalists may head to the nature reserve of Cabezas de San Juan to experience the seven different ecosystems and bioluminescent bay.
Surfers might want to get their boards out of the yacht’s toy store and head to Rincon, the ‘California’ of Puerto Rico, where massive surf breaks attract enthusiasts from around the globe. Divers can find the perfection of Isla Desecheo’s dazzling coral reefs and crystalline waters to be some of the best in the Caribbean.
Puerto Rico is ringed with gorgeous beaches of pristine sands and azure waves. Playa Flamenco is touted as one of the best beaches on the planet and should not be missed.
