Camper & Nicholsons at Monaco Yacht Show 2023
The principality of Monaco was electric last month, with the Monaco Yacht Show in full swing. The Monaco Yacht Show 2023 ran between 27 to 30 September and saw a much larger number of yachts at anchor in Monaco compared with the previous year.
A total of 175 yachts attended; 116 yachts were docked in Port Hercule and 59 at anchor and in the area. Camper & Nicholsons represented 15 yachts in total including five yachts on display, and a further ten Camper & Nicholsons yachts were at anchor in Monaco.
The average age of yachts on display was lower than previous years. Unlike 2022 when the oldest yacht in attendance was delivered during the interwar period, the oldest yacht at the 2023 edition was built in 1981. Yet, despite a more modern fleet of superyachts this year, the market value of these yachts was significantly lower than 2022.
The combined value of yachts on display (based on total asking price) dipped from €4.33bn in 2022 to €4.11bn+ in 2023. The average asking price was also significantly lower at €18.4m in 2023 compared with €21.2m in 2022. It is fair to say that 2023 is a buyers’ market.
Global attendance also spiked this year and the Monaco Yacht Show was able to welcome visitors from the east, Asia specifically, once again. The restrictions that followed the Covid-19 outbreak in 2019/20 left many clients and visitors unable to attend either the 2021 or 2022 Monaco Yacht Show.
“It was a pleasure to welcome and reconnect with many clients from Asia again at this year’s show,” says Paolo Casani, chief executive officer at Camper & Nicholsons. “We had a successful event and the whole Camper & Nicholsons team was incredibly busy.”
Camper & Nicholsons strategic vision
Against the backdrop of a changing and evolving landscape, Camper & Nicholsons presented its forward-facing plans, which include two strategic new hires. During the press breakfast on board the 55m Feadship Sea Huntress, it was announced that Callum Peden and Julie Bichon have both joined Camper & Nicholsons.
Callum has joined Camper & Nicholsons as the group marketing director, while Julie will oversee charter operations, assuming the role of global head of charter management. Both are renowned for their visionary leadership, acute foresight, and their commitment to placing the client at the centre of their decision-making process. The forward-facing and holistic approach that both Julie and Callum adopt mirrors the values of Camper & Nicholsons.
During the press breakfast, the managing directors who lead the new Camper & Nicholsons offices in Singapore, Dubai, and Athens provided updates on their respective markets. The key messages are as follows:
Camper & Nicholsons Singapore office
“Singapore is an important financial hub, with the increased presence of family offices from Hong Kong, Mainland China and Taiwan,” says Julien Solari, Chief Commercial Officer of Camper & Nicholsons Asia. “Added to this financial strength is its well-connected geographical location with Thailand and Indonesia, its developing infrastructure and its offering for year-round sailing. Singapore is an important yachting hub and we are well placed to support clients in the region.”
Camper & Nicholsons Dubai office
“The Emirates is a hot market. The improved infrastructure is attracting owners to the region while setting up local offices and being geographically centred in the Middle East is opening the doors to new business,” says Giovanni Alessi, Managing Director of C&N Middle East and CTO of C&N.
Camper & Nicholsons Athens office
“We are offering many new yachts from our recently-opened office in the heart of the Athens Riviera,” says Christos Chatzigiakoumis, managing director of C&N Greece. “The 88m locally-built Project X by Golden Yachts is an incredible charter yacht that has become a firm favourite for many. We also have the 59m Benetti Meamina, offered for sale and charter, amongst our list of CAs.”
Camper & Nicholsons also hosted industry, partner, and client events across the week. The most notable was a reintroduction to Indonesia, a region that is rapidly gaining popularity, co-hosted by Aqua Expeditions. Camper & Nicholsons works closely with Aqua Expeditions for regional off-the-beaten-track itineraries, many of which were shared at the event. For more, read here.
Camper & Nicholsons fleet at Monaco Yacht Show
There were 20 Camper & Nicholsons yachts in and around Monaco, including the neighbourhood France and Italy, last month, from 28m to over 60m in length. Docked in Port Hercule were two beautiful 55m Feadships, Kahalani and Sea Huntress, as well as the 52.3m Amels Were Dreams and the 49.8m Heesen Van Tom. Joining this Dutch fleet was the 43m CRN Only Eighty.
The largest Camper & Nicholsons yacht at anchor was the 63.5m Benetti Lioness V. Designed by Stefano Natucci and Argent Design respectively handling her exterior and interior design, Lioness V is both aesthetically striking and highly capable in performance. Lioness V has an interior volume just shy of 1,400 GT and accommodation for 12 guests and 21 crew. Coupled with an impressive 5,800 nautical mile range, Lioness V is one of the few white Mediterranean yachts that inspire true exploration.
As typical of the Monaco Yacht Show, it was dominated by motor yachts. There were 18 sailing yachts, with Camper & Nicholsons representing the 45.26m Perini Navi Blush.
