Explorer Yachts

Designed to venture far from shore on extended passages, crossing oceans to reach the furthest corners of the earth, today’s expedition and explorer-style superyachts are most commonly identified by their rugged outward appearance, but true adventuring ability lies within, as do sumptuous, sophisticated interiors and all the luxuries of modern life.

Typically of motor yacht designation, these ocean-going vessels often have full displacement hulls that favour range over speed, delivering seaworthiness, stability and comfort.  Alongside the finest new builds are pre-owned, purpose-built yachts, and refitted vessels that previously served as large fishing trawlers, navy ships and artic-capable tugs that have been luxuriously transformed into the ultimate expedition yachts, completed and kitted-out to superyacht standards.

Explorer yachts have captured the imagination of many a superyacht owner, offering unrivalled all weather cruising with limitless possibility.  The expedition-style superyacht has been made popular by its sure seaworthiness, stability, long-range capability, comparatively low fuel consumption and reduced carbon footprint, suitability to withstand harsher climates, and their high volume hulls that offer generous living accommodation.

On deck, explorer yachts have the potential to carry a small fleet of additional craft encompassing everything from tenders and your typical superyacht water toys (Jet skis, kayaks, sailing dinghies, etc), to personal submarines and even off-road/all-terrain vehicles for on-shore exploration.  The expansive deck space often has a dual role as a helipad, allowing guests to fly in and out with ease. An explorer yacht is often stationed in an area for an extended period of time, remaining self-sufficient in even the most remote of locations.

Some are built to stringent Class requirements certifying a yacht as Ice or Polar Class, and usually constructed in steel or GRP, other common features of these world-cruising vessels are a Portuguese bridge, observation lounges, walk-around decks and machinery/engine rooms which are easily accessed and maintained.

With this burgeoning trend in long-distance expedition cruising, has come a vast variety of design offerings from the international shipyards.  Watch out for the pretenders – some have the looks but not the bones! Purchasing or chartering an explorer yacht should be done so with a stringent selection process and with specialist knowledge; helping you identify the key ingredients for your requirements.
