Hong Kong South

Encompasing more than 41,700 hectares of the South China Sea, Hong Kong South includes the areas of of South Lantau, the Soko Islands, South Lamma, Aberdeen, Po Toi and Cape D'Aguilar. The exceptional biodiversity of Hong Kong’s waters is a result of the region’s location within a historical migratory route for various species of whales, dolphins, sea turtles and squid. However, increased boating and fishing traffic has severely affected marine populations in the area, which was once home to more than 6,000 species of fish and 100 species of coral – including the now critically endangered endemic Chinese Bahaba fish. Mission Blue declared this region a hope spot in July 2022 following the efforts of local NGO AquaMeridian, which has been working since 2015 to increase protection of local marine species including finless porpoises, sea turtles, horseshoe crabs and the Chinese white dolphin.
