The Scott Islands comprise five Canadian islands and provide a critical habitat for several species of seabirds with more than 400,000 pairs of Cassin’s auklets nests – the world’s largest colony! Triangle Island (of the Scott Islands) is also home to some 40,000 pairs of rhinoceros auklets, 26,000 pairs of tufted puffins and the threatened marbled murrelet. The islands and surrounding waters have experienced pressure from serious overfishing, bycatch and pollution. But the Canadian government took action by establishing a Marine Protected Area to halt these damaging activities and preserve this valuable ecosystem.
