San Francisco Bay is a world-renowned hot spot for marine biodiversity situated in the country’s most urbanized estuary of 8 million people. Beyond the region's high-tech and conservation-minded population, the surrounding waters are home to exquisite marine mammals including harbor porpoises and bottlenose dolphins. Billions of dollars have been invested in helping to recover the water quality in the area over the last several decades, however, there is much more work to be done. Including San Francisco Bay in a marine protected area would be a step towards more thorough protection of this unique marine ecosystem.
