Mosquito Lagoon is located in the northern part of the Indian River Lagoon system on the east coast of Florida and is known for being home to the red drum trout and a well-known destination for birdwatchers and nature tours. Perhaps one of the most pressing issues the area has faced is the massive amount of waste being dumped from surrounding counties. However, work is being done to preserve and protect sensitive species in the area. The Nature Conservancy is coordinating an oyster restoration project, developed by the University of Central Florida with the goal of restoring about 40 acres (160,000 m2) of oyster reef habitat within the Canaveral National Seashore.
