Mayan Riviera

The Mayan Riviera is part of the Mesoamerican Reef (MAR), and is located in the northern region of the MAR at the coasts of Quintana Roo, Mexico. The area encompasses 11 kinds of marine and coastal wetlands, and a rich biodiversity including more than 3,000 marine species reported. Such an important natural place is heavily impacted by tourism in Quintana Roo (the main economic activity of the region) and the local community is working hard to decrease the damage done over the last several decades. Luckily, 16 marine protected areas (MPAs) along the Riviera Maya already exist. Cause for hope!
