Knysna Bay

From Buffalo Bay to Sparrebosch, the Knysna Hope Spot includes the Knysna Estuary, marine coastline and offshore waters. The Knysna estuary is an essential breeding ground for up to 80% of coastal fish species in the area, and is home to the Knysna seahorse – South Africa's only endemic seahorse species – and one of two endangered seahorses in the world. This area is already safeguarded within South Africa’s Garden Route National Park, however much of the area struggles from severe wildfire damage and overfishing. Luckily, several organizations and citizen science programs have been hard at work to conserve the Knysna seahorse and the rest of the ecosystem to ensure a healthy future for the entire estuary.
