Located in the southwest Indian Ridge in the Indian Ocean, this sub-Antarctic seamount hosts rich coldwater coral reef communities, including new species that taxonomists are still working to describe. This seamount also supports numerous seabird species including the wandering albatross and white-chinned petrel. The United Nations has declared it an ecologically and biologically significant area (EBSA), and the fishing industry voluntarily protects its seafloor. However, evidence suggests that trawling is still occuring, causing significant damage to the reefs.
