The town of Chichiriviche de la Costa is a small gem on the Venezuelan coastline, set in a tranquil bay where a freshwater river runs through the mountains and empties into the sea. Coral reefs live on both sides of the bay, accompanied by a wide diversity of marine life, including medusas and sea sponges, Hawksbill sea turtles, species of sardines, herring, cetaceans, seahorses and sea stars also inhabit these waters. Several coral species in Chichiriviche de la Costa are critically endangered due to the global rise in sea water temperatures, and the local river is known to deposit contaminants into the ocean. However, groups of students at the Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV) have been hard at work conducting research and organizing conservation programs to preserve the stunning ecosystem that Venezuelans and the entire world can enjoy for generations to come.
