Agulhas Front

The Agulhas Front originates below the southern tip of Africa and merges with the Southern Subtropical Front in the Indian Ocean sector of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. The area is known to be a key habitat for blue whales and tuna, and a feeding area for the critically endangered amsterdam albatross, a species that consists of only 100 mating pairs left. Luckily, The Agulhas Front was established as a marine protected area in 2016 as a means to secure the area's sensitive marine habitat and valuable spawning grounds, a hopeful step towards a healthy future for the albatross.
