Iceland

Flatey is the largest island of the western islands, a cluster of about forty large and small islands and islets located on the northwestern part of Iceland. Flatey and its surrounding islands are, as a creation, believed to have forged from under the weight of a great glacier during the previous Ice age. Most of the island's land is flat hence its name meaning 'flat island' in Icelandic, with scarcely any hills to be found.
The Latrabjarg cliffs, the westernmost point of Iceland, are home to birds in unfathomable numbers.

Vigur Island has earned itself a great reputation with its beautiful landscape and how the few inhabitants live in harmony with thousands of birds.
Previously named 'The Western Horn', Hornbjarg is a sheer cliff with one of the greatest seafowl habitats in the country, where the highest peaks of the cliff reach 534 metres above sea level.

Siglufjordur is a particularly beautiful fjord, and high, dramatic mountains tower over the town. The birdlife is varied and some 2,000 birds of 16-18 species are usually found in the fjord. Akureyri is a very picturesque town, located by a scenic fjord, and eclectic building styles and streets wind their way through gorges. Spend some time walking around the town centre, see the impressive church and check out Listagilio (literally 'the art canyon'), home to a number of art and craft galleries and shops.
The tranquil municipal botanical garden is also worth visiting, as are the several small museums dotted around town.

Located in the heart of north-east Iceland about 105 kilometers south of the Arctic Circle, Lake Myvatn with its unique nature and rich birdlife, is one of Europe’s greatest natural treasures. Shaped by repeated volcanic eruptions and seismic activity through the ages, the landscape around the 36.5km.sq lake, situated at an altitude of 277m above sea-level, provides a spectacular panorama of surreal lava, crater and cave formations, sulfur-streaked mountains, and sweeping wetlands teeming with plant and birdlife.

Nestled on the edge of Shaky Bay, the town of Husavik is globally recognized as one of the best locations in the world from which to watch whales. In fact, there is a higher chance of seeing whales in Husavik than any other place in Iceland.
More than 40km north of mainland Iceland lies Grimsey Island. Though treeless, the island's vegetation cover is rich, consisting of marshland, grass and moss, and the island is home to many birds, especially auks.

Langanes is a narrow peninsula shaped like a goose with a very large head. On the north and south of the tip named Fontur, there are steep sea cliffs.
The Langanes peninsula is known for its rich birdlife, and there are several spots where it is possible to watch the Gannet and Brünnichs Guillermot from land.

Papey, the small island off Djupivogur, is named after the Papar - the Irish monks, believed to have been in Iceland prior to the Viking settlement. The island was inhabited for more than a thousand years, until 1966. Papey is the largest island off the east coast of Iceland and of great interest for birdwatchers.

Surtsey is a volcanic island, part of the Westman Islands and formed by an underwater volcanic eruption in 1963.
The island was declared a nature reserve in 1965 and in 2008, UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site. It is considered a classic site for the study of biocolonization.
