Camper & Nicholsons is delighted to announce its appointment as Central Agents for Sonny III. Launched in 2018, and refit in 2021 this 27.84m high performance cruising and racing sloop was built at Brooklin Boat Yard in Maine.  She was the third build at Brooklin for an experienced owner, and in 2021 she was acquired by a well-known figurehead of the superyacht industry who had a new vision for Sonny III.

The current owner has treated the yacht to a complete upgrade of all systems, and further refined her with a top-of-the-line racing package.  She received a full repaint and improvements were made to add significant racing elements to the yacht’s initial cruising capabilities.  The works spanned several months and were completed in late 2021, at a cost of over $2.5 million.

Boasting a custom carbon rig and new North Sails, Sonny III joined the racing fleet for the 2022 St Barths Bucket.  Her magnificent shear-line, varnished toe-rails and ventilator boxes, pristine teak decks and new sails drew many admiring looks from fellow race participants and spectators. As usual, she turns heads everywhere she goes. 

Sonny III’s interior provides an extremely comfortable living space.  The yacht is equipped with first-rate components for everything from the galley equipment to her fixtures and soft furnishings.  Her classic Herreshoff style with white and cream paintwork is offset by American cherry joinery, leather upholstery, and a teak and maple cabin sole speaks for itself.

This sailing yacht has accommodation for eight guests in four cabins.  There are three guest suites forward of the main salon, and access to the full-beam master stateroom is either through the portside passageway or through the galley, as well as there being a direct entryway from the helm cockpit on the aft deck.  Should an owner wish to operate the yacht with a crew, the guest cabin to starboard would serve this requirement well – it has double bunks and a multi-function display from which the safety and navigation systems can be monitored.

The open-plan saloon features a large elliptical dining table with a curved bank of seating, a built-in settee along the port side, a state-of-the-art navigation station, and a large, functional galley to starboard.

On deck, Sonny III’s twin cockpit configuration provides safe seating for guests amidships, while all sail handling is controlled from the aft helm area.  Low, varnished teak coamings and canvas dodgers protect each companionway opening, and both cockpits can be protected by bimini covers.  The guest cockpit also features a collapsible table, providing an option for on-deck dining or this can be removed when in regatta mode.

The foredeck area is carefully laid out with flush deck hatches and stainless dorades for proper cabin ventilation.  There is a sail locker in the bow, windlass winch, dual anchor rollers, and a removable pulpit for proper sail management when racing.

Sonny III has a hydraulic fold-down swim platform for access to the water, and a full-beam lazarette that’s been outfitted with custom shelving to assist with organisation of her loose equipment, parts, and cleaning supplies.   

This sailing yacht promises the best of both worlds, fit-out for racing but with the ability to serve as a wonderful weekend cruiser for family adventures.  Sonny III cruises with effortless capability, and the gears easily change-up into racing mode when desired.  This, along with her pedigree build and meticulous care from her current owner, make her one of the most versatile sailing vessels on the water and a true dream boat for the right person.
