Classic Camper & Nicholsons yacht, Cynara, nominated for Classic Boat Awards 2021

Camper and Nicholsons is proud to announce that a classic Camper & Nicholsons yacht, Cynara, built in 1927, owned by RIVIERA Group in Japan, has been nominated in the 14th Classic Boat Awards 2021 in the “Restored Sailing Vessel over 40ft (12.2m)” category.

A warm congratulations to the Riviera Group whose vision was to restore this classic sailing yacht to its prime. Considering the nomination, it is safe to say, that the extensive restoration is a resounding success.

The ambitious project began in 2015, on Cynara’s 88th birthday and took place at Cynara’s home port at RIVIERA Seabonia Marina in Japan. The restoration began in earnest in 2017, on Cynara’s 90th Birthday. Riviera’s owner had a strong desire to bring her back to her former glory.
Over the course of the following 48 months, 50 talented shipwrights from 10 countries, along with local Japanese craftsmen have brought Cynara back to the prime of her life.

Dismantling this beautiful sailing yacht, a symbol of British ingenuity, along with rebuilding the keel, frames and the hull required unparalleled international cooperation along with unique techniques and craftsmanship.

A worthy endeavour, this extensive project is still ongoing to this day. A significant amount of care has been taken to respect and uphold the initial design, from the banning of power tools to remove the paint on the hull to keeping as many of the original elements as possible – 92% of the original teak planking was used, for example.

Therefore, it comes as no surprise that Cynara has been nominated in the Classic Boat Awards
2021!
