The Superyacht Design Forum 2019
The Superyacht Design Forum took place at London’s Design Centre in Chelsea Harbour last month, and welcomed over 200 international delegates through its doors.
The Forum, organised by The Superyacht Group, sees speakers from varying industries, many of which are outside the superyacht sector, present on their own experiences and offer fresh perspective on the issues encountered by the superyacht design fraternity.
The event was split into 18 sessions with three keynote presentations, and complemented by two Champagne receptions. Featured talks included a presentation from Arthur Mamou-Mani AA dipl, ARB/RIBA FRSA, who shared his perspective on the superyacht industry and illustrated the potential of cutting-edge technology such as 3D-printing with bioplastic, within the yacht design and build process. As director of the award-winning practice Mamou-Mani Architects, which specialises in a new kind of digitally-designed and fabricated architecture, Mamou-Mani explored how these methods may contribute to minimising the impact of carbon-heavy manufacturing processes across multiple industries.
Many of the event’s workshops focussed on sustainability and debate was provoked about what more the superyacht industry can be doing to safeguard its own future.
Camper & Nicholsons’ Chief Innovation and Technology Officer, Giovanni Alessi, attended the event and gave a special presentation on design excellence, discussing how this has shaped his whole career. Alessi focused on product innovation and how this needs to be in response to an identified need, but related the topic to the world of business.
The forum was a powerful meeting of minds and Martin H. Redmayne, Chairman of The Superyacht Group, described the topics covered as “Rich, diverse and unequivocally fascinating.”
The Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour, is the largest of its kind in Europe and is home to 120 showrooms, showcasing over 600 of the world’s most prestigious and luxury brands.
